Despite being made in different times and societies, some striking similarities can be noted between the new and old versions. In the film West Side Story which was made in 1961, the plot focuses on the theme of forbidden love which is very common. Then again that same theme has been used in the 1996 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. It has been seen that in both the movie the families were against the lovers. The only difference is that in West Side Story, race relations played a significant role highlighting further the obstacles as faced by the interracial couples.
